Technology – Tank sensor
Tank sensor technology
The tank sensors measure the fill level in the tank and transmit the measured value to the display unit using just 2 cables. They are supplied with 12 V or 24 V from the display unit and are de-energised when not in use. The encapsulated electronics (IP 67) are also suitable for inhospitable operation on underground tanks and are frost-proof. All VOTRONIC transducers work independently of pressure, i.e. there is no falsification of measured values in the event of overpressure in the tank, pressurised refuelling or similar. Protection against reverse polarity, overvoltage, short circuit and overload is also included as standard.

Function
In the capacitive measuring method, an insulated measuring electrode forms an electrical capacitor with the surrounding medium (water). As the fill level rises, this “capacitance” also increases. The electronics analyse this effect by means of a small alternating voltage and transmit an electrical signal to the display unit according to the fill level. The advantage of this measuring method is not only the stepless measurement but also its depth effect and thus the insensitivity to contamination, deposits and solids in the tank. Depending on the sensor type, the insulated measuring electrode is designed as a rod or flexible cable probe for different installation variants, tank heights and installation situations on the tank.
